About Community Councils
The New York City Police Department Community Councils have been in operation since 1943. Today, there is a Council in each of the city's precincts.
Each Council, which generally meets on a monthly basis, provides the community with an opportunity for direct communication with the Precinct's Commanding Officer and other key police personnel in order to enhance relations between the police and the community, to promote NYPD programs, to initiate Council-sponsored programs and events that enhances public safety and the quality of life in the community, and to recruit broad and diverse community participation in the Council.
All members of the public are welcome to attend and actively participate in monthly Council meetings.
Anyone from the community, 18 years of age or older, may become an official member of the Community Council in order to vote on official Council business, elect officers of the Council, or run for Council office. An individual may vote as a member of the Council after attending three (3) or more regular meetings within the twelve (12) month period prior to a meeting when elections or official business may be conducted.
